Spartanburg’s heinous (and unusually well-documented) history of lynchings and racial terror is not well known, but acknowledging it is crucial to understanding why our present is the way is it is, to healing, and to moving into a future Spartanburg where the circumstances of our births no longer dictate the circumstances of our lives.
The above video is a powerful example from another South Carolina community of how healing it can be when a community finally tells the truth about its lynchings and racial terror.
The first step in The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI)’s guidelines for communities that wish to embark on a community remembrance process is to assemble a large, broad, multiracial coalition to guide it.
